Swedis on-line

The Medical Products Agency (MPA) is the authority responsible for surveillance of all aspects concerning pharmaceuticals in Sweden. The volume of information flowing in to the MPA is expanding rapidly, and demands for even quicker access to this information pool are constantly being raised. To meet these requirements the MPA has built a computerized drug information system called SWEDIS (SWEdish Drug Information System). This system links various sections of information regarding pharmaceuticals, and enables the user to obtain information from more than one section of the database from a single search.

The swedis database contains information on the following sections:

Medicinal products
Contains regulatory data of all currently approved medicinal products as well as withdrawn products. The ingredient section contains the complete composition including type and quantity.

Substances
Contains the names of all ingredients. Synonymous names of substances are also stored.

Adverse reactions
Contains details on all adverse events reported by Swedish physicians and dentists since the registration of adverse events was introduced in 1965.

Sales statistics
Contains details on sales of each individual package marketed since 1971. Sales updates are made every quarter and delivered by Läkemedelsstatistik AB (LSAB, Sweden's pharmacovigilance statistics company). It is possible to derive the sales figures from the sales statistics, expressed both as sales turnover in money and packages as well as in number of sold Daily Defined Dosage per Thousand Inhabitants and Day (DDD/TID).

Ever since its foundation Pharmasoft has provided an on-line service to SWEDIS for external clients, but now this service has been taken over by the Medical Product Agency it self. The service has given clients access to the different database sections described above.
